Cam Speedy - Ecologist, Conservationist, Sika Expert, and Hunter

July 10, 2020

Cam Speedy would have to be one of the most knowledgable individuals we have spoken too since we started the podcast over two years ago. When it comes to deer, natural systems, native Flora, native Forna, non-native species, ecological systems, animal management, and conservation in New Zealand Cam is full of a wealth of knowledge. The combination of boots on the ground experience combined with an academic foundation built over a lifetime of work and learning is a rare thing in this day and age. Enjoy this wide-ranging conversation covering everything from the Central North Island Sika Foundation, deer management, Fiordland Wapiti, and the importance of managing systems in New Zealand. Cam Speedy has a deep understanding and respect for our Whenua and is such an asset moving forward.

Tahr 101 - What you need to know about whats happening to our Tahr in New Zealand

Tahr 101 - What you need to know about whats happening to our Tahr in New Zealand

June 30, 2020

Willie Duley delivers an audio version of the Tahr story unfolding right now in New Zealand.

Willie explains a brief history, how we have found ourselves in this position, and how our conservation minister and Forest and Bird representatives continue to mislead the NZ public around the eradication of Tahr, their so-called “justification” for it, and the total lack of consultation with relevant stakeholders.

Share this far and wide - kiwi’s need to understand how the extreme views held by a very small group is being forced on us.

Khan Adam - Passionate Hunting Dad

Khan Adam - Passionate Hunting Dad

May 30, 2020

Kuran catches back up with Khan on another hunt, this time Khan has his 8-year-old son Max with him sharing the adventure. We take a look at fathering young hunters, things that Khan has learned along the way, and what that final destination might look like. Somewhere along the discussion Khan starts asking Kuran questions, the conversation “bobs and weaves” from topic to topic very honestly. Kuran gets a quick chat with Max also to share how it looks in the eyes of an eight-year-old.

Sean Olmstead - Outfitter, Guide, Bush Pilot, and GOABC president

Sean Olmstead - Outfitter, Guide, Bush Pilot, and GOABC president

May 15, 2020

Sean has been in the hunting industry and in and around airplanes for his entire career. Sean has an impressive guiding, outfitting, and flying record as well as being the current president of the Guide Outfitters Association of British Columbia (GOABC). Not only was it a good chance to learn about Sean and some of his adventures but it was a very important learning opportunity with regard to the GOABC. GOABC and the professional outfitters of Canada have a long history with anti-hunting activists, game management, and important learnings about the internal relationship between “resident hunters” and “professional guide outfitters”.

Gareth Hughes - Victory Knives

Gareth Hughes - Victory Knives

May 1, 2020

Gareth Hughes is the relatively new owner (relative to how long the company has been around!) of the NZ based knife making company Victory knives. Gareth has always keen fisherman and hunter but he is new to owning a business that fit’s into the hunting/fishing/butchery world in New Zealand. Matt managed to catch up with Gareth in a crowed McDonalds at Auckland airport, pre-COVID, to discuss everything from what makes a good knife, why Emirates Team New Zealand carry pig stickers on the chase boats, to mental health in New Zealand.

Hunt and Gather Recipe Book - Raise money for mental health in NZ

Hunt and Gather Recipe Book - Raise money for mental health in NZ

April 23, 2020

100% of all profits - Donated to Charity

We collect the best recipes from hunter-gatherers, put them in a book, and sell it to raise money for charity.

It’s really not that complicated, all profits will be donated to a registered charity, this year we’ve decided to target mental health in New Zealand, with a specific focus on our rural community. Suggestions on where the money is most needed will be appreciated.

We want everyone to contribute either recipes, photos, or both. Providing food we gather from the wild is a huge part of who we are as a community. There is something special about preparing what we harvest and providing it to others.

Share your favorite way to prepare wild foods, meats, seafood, or anything that you enjoy in the mountains or with your family.

Given we all have some time on our hands; share with your community for the good of your community.
